  • Overview

    Purchasing Manager, North America is responsible for managing assigned categories / suppliers of North American regional spend for items such as Raw Materials (e.g., Solvents, Natural Rubber, Polypropylene Resin, Adhesives, etc.), Third Party Products, supporting R&D Product Development Projects, and/or Indirect Materials. The position is responsible to manage assigned spend with objectives in the areas of cost, time and legal requirements.

    As the technical specification is a critical component in determining the product cost and the level of supply safety in serial production, the Purchasing Manager is responsible to challenge the technical specification as appropriate and is very involved in the supplier selection process.


    Purchasing Manager, North America reports to Senior Regional Manager Purchasing, North America, who reports to the head of the global tesa Purchasing Network (tPN). The head of global tPN reports to a tesa tape Board Member (Head of tesa Supply Network (tSN)).


    tPN is tesa tape’s global Strategic Purchasing department. The tPN team manages an annual global spend of approximately €600 million across dimensions of cost, supply safety, and supplier performance / innovation. Most of the tPN team is located at tesa SE headquarters in Hamburg, Germany; however, tPN team members are also located in China, Malaysia, and North America. All tPN members globally have solid line reporting to tesa SE in Hamburg, Germany.


    Purchasing Manager, North America attends the yearly global tPN Conference typically held in Germany.


    1. Develop & maintain purchasing strategy for assigned categories for tesa tape North America (ttNA)
    2. Manage existing supply base to control / reduce the cost level for tesa
    3. Identify and qualify North American (NA) suppliers for North America, Europe and Asia
    4. Establish purchasing contracts as needed for strategic suppliers
    5. Support further development of tesa tape corporate purchasing standards, tools and methods in ttNA
    6. Close coordination with tPN Global Category and Supplier Managers; Regional Headquarter groups
    7. Marketing, R&D and Supply Chain; tesa Supply Network (tSN); tesa Plant Sparta (tPSp) Management Team & Plant Purchasing
    8. Provide material cost forecast for identified spend
    9. Provide direct support as assigned for four primary categories of Purchasing in North America:

    Indirect purchasing:

    • Items such as Machines and Services

    Third Party purchasing:

    • Third Party Products are finished products tesa tape purchases from other (tape) manufacturers

          R&D purchasing:

    • Close cooperation with ttNA R&D
    • Define and execute purchasing objectives in ttNA R&D projects
    • Identify and qualify NA suppliers for new tesa products with a focus on supplier innovation

          Direct Materials (Serial purchasing):

    • Identify, bundle and negotiate Raw Materials for ttNA serial production
    • Identification and qualification of alternative suppliers
    • Solve or escalate supply bottlenecks and supplier quality issues


    1. Bachelor of Science degree required (Supply Chain, Engineering, Business Administration or relevant field); Master’s degree is a plus
    2. Three or more years of experience within a strategic purchasing function required
    3. Cross functional experience required
    4. Tape / adhesive / chemical industry experience is a plus
    5. Proven track record in developing / applying state of the art industrial purchasing tools and methods
    6. Demonstrated understanding and experience in industrial product development processes
    7. Strong planning, analysis and execution skills
    8. Excellent communication skills (oral & written); fluent in English, additional language(s) a plus
    9. Ability to interact effectively within multiple hierarchal levels
    10. Intercultural / international project experience preferred
    11. Proficient in Windows / Microsoft Office; experience with ERP platforms (SAP is a plus)
    12. Able to travel domestically and internationally – approximately 25%
